The Pop Culture in Media

Popular Culture, or pop-culture for short, is the amalgamation of multiple things in which society holds at a specific level of recognition, and is considered popular to like or be a fan of. When considering that, we see that Super Mario Bros is one of the most timeless examples of pop-culture in the world. When we think of Mario, we think of the portly italian plumber the jumps around, stomping on turtles, collecting coins, and beating up giant dragon-turtle things. However, that is what makes Mario so widely beloved as a pop-culture icon. He has appeared from his own official media, memes, parodies, etc. Needless to say, Mario is a prime example of how pop-media/pop-culture has affected society, as Mario has brought many families, friends, and all in between together.

Looking at these images, you can see Mario is quite popular in other forms of media, including bootleg games, such as Somari above, which is a bootlegged version of Sonic The Hedgehog 1, but with Mario taking the center stage. Or Mad Magazine, which is an age old parody series of comics and TV shows, which consist of hilarious parodies of the portly plumber. There are even Mario toys, figures, etc, for people like me who like to collect, or for the kids who love to play with them!

Just take a listen to the Mario Melody, and almost everyone in the world is familiar with it, a prime example of how pop-culture brings people together.

Almost everybody knows the Mario theme, and almost everyone has played a Mario game from time to time, making him a common interest among people, and with a common interest, comes aligning yourself with others who share a likeminded enjoyment from the interest in question. It's because of Mario's appeal that some friends even ended up becoming friends, because they played Mario Kart, or Mario Party, or Super Smash Bros. together, they became interested in it and became friends because of their common liking for Super Mario.

This can apply to anything. The reason all of this is important is because pop-culture is something that brings people together, and gives people something to talk about. Pop-culture helps pave the way of our generation with new interests and things to bond over, making people more likely to find themselves with each other, rather than against each other.

This page talks about how something like Mario, which is incredibly famous in pop-culture media can bring people together via common interest, in Page 2, you will learn about why pop-culture is important when it comes to familiarity.
